A Community-Wide Curriculum Pairing Jewish Values with Photography

In the spring of 2010, the Coalition for Jewish Learning offered a community-wide photography project using the nationally recognized photography curriculum of The Jewish Lens. This semester-long project enabled teens to capture the diversity and richness of the Milwaukee Jewish community through a unique curriculum that incorporated the works of renowned Israeli photographer Zion Ozeri. With the assistance of Mid-West Jewish Lens Coordinator Kipp Friedman and local area day school and religious school educators, Milwaukee students documented their experiences through their own personal Jewish lenses. The event culminated in a photo exhibit at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center on May 11, 2010.

Involved organizations: Congregations Beth Israel, Emanu’El B’ne Jeshurun, Emanu’El of Waukesha, Shalom, and Sinai; Milwaukee Jewish Day School, The Academy (Hillel), Torah Academy of Milwaukee, and Wisconsin Institute of Torah Study. Special thanks to BBYO - Wisconsin Region for assistance in the project.

The Jewish Lens was offered through the Coalition for Jewish Learning, the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and was made possible by a generous grant from the Covenant Foundation.
